Sadakat, cömertlik, adalet ve nezaket erdemlerine sahip olduğu için çevresi tarafından çok sevilmiş ve şehrin sevgilisi haline gelmiştir.Ancak bu kapalı hayatı içinde bile döneminin önemli düşünsel, siyasi ve bilimsel gelişmelerini yakından izlemiş, zamanının kültürel iklimiyle Amerikan ve Fransız Devrimlerinden etkilenerek görüşlerini şekillendirmiştir. Dolayısıyla felsefesi hem küresel hem de yerel dayanaklardan beslenmiştir. Günlük tutmamış, hayatına dair ayrıntıların sızmasına izin vermemiş, yaşamıyla eserleri arasına sağlam bir duvar örerek kendimizden söz etmiyoruz düsturundan ayrılmamıştır. Görevimiz kitap yaratmak değil, kişilik yaratmaktır. En büyük şaheserimiz gereğine uygun bir hayat sürmektir görüşünü benimseyen bir düşünürdür. Kişiliği, bizzat kendisinin bilinçli bir yaratısıdır. Son derece ayrıntılı araştırmaların sonucu olarak ortaya çıkan elinizdeki kitap, varolan bütün Kant biyografilerini eleştirel bir süzgeçten geçirip Kant'ın hayatı hakkındaki birçok miti yıkarak bu bilinçli yaratıyı çözümlemekte ve onun yaşamıyla felsefi eserlerinin anlamlı ve detaylı bir sentezini yapmaktadır.Kant felsefesi, Rönesans'tan sonraki Avrupa felsefesi için bir kavşak noktasıdır. Bu felsefe hem Rönesans sonrası tüm gelişmelerin ana çizgilerini bir derleyici edasıyla kendinde taşır, hem de kendisinden sonraki Avrupa felsefesi için kaynak işlevi görür. Getirdiği yeni çözümsel denemelerle, 19.yüzyılın ilk yarısında özellikle Fichte, Schelling, Hegel ve kısmen Schopenhauer ile bütünlük kazanan Alman idealizminin sarsılmaz bir sistem yaratma tutkusunun kurucusudur.
