Answer: Yes, it can be used anytime and does not require a stand. Non-slip mat works as a great alternative to a stand. -

How can I recognize the correct side of the stone?
Answer: Try each side with an already polished blade using a lubricant like water or window cleaner. The correct side will become clear, it may take time to discolour the lube with black. Using a 10X loupe will reveal fine scratches once polished. -

What are the dimensions of the sharpener?
Answer: The actual sharpening stone dimensions are 3" wide x 8" long and 3/8" thick. -
Question:
Are they reversible with one side fine and the other extra fine?
Answer: The Fine/ExtraFine combination is reversible. However, the ExtraExtra Fine is one-sided. -

Will this fit in an 8-inch DuoSharp base? And, Is extra-extra-fine and extra-fine available in the DuoSharp stone?
Answer: Yes, it will fit in the base. However, there are no tabs on the DiaSharp stones as there are on the DuoSharp stones. The rubber pads of the DuoSharp base can hold the DiaSharp stone in position. DMT does not make extra-extra-fine and extra-fine stones in a DuoSharp, only DiaSharp.
